If you’ve found your way here, it’s because you have the same question that numerous ask while they go shopping for a new mattress. First of all, how do a dumb mattress cost hundreds or even tens and thousands of dollars? It’s slightly offensive simply how much some companies look for these products. But, more importantly, do cheap mattresses exist? Where can they be found? And will they be so lousy that I wake up each night in pain. These are all important questions, and we will take the time in this post to try and address your concerns.
First of all, let’s think about what makes a mattress so expensive in the initial place. I think this is a bit mysterious to the majority of people Dormidan, myself included. After all, what are we talking about here: a lot of steel springs encased in a few foam, fabric, and other materials that would otherwise be quite inexpensive. But, shortly ago, many of these components were assembled manually in the USA. Mattress production simply couldn’t be automated, which made selling an inexpensive mattress set out from the question. Fast forward several decades, when production has moved overseas and advanced technology has allowed these pieces to be assembled with not as human contact, and it’s hard to understand why prices have gone nowhere but up.
But let’s give this some further thought. Since production has moved overseas, you will find large transportation costs associated with your products. After all, they’re large and heavy. So, we have to grant some leniency there. However, that also doesn’t arrive at the bottom of the issue. What’s happened, in my estimation, is that someone discovered that people can easily associate increased price with increased quality as it pertains to a mattress, much the same way people look at blue jeans or kitchen items. The funny thing is that, with a mattress, no one else can easily see which brand you’ve bought. Which means that the salesperson has to convince people that they are getting what they pay for — that cheap mattress sets are cheap for a reason. This is why you’ve seen the rise of Sleep Train and Mattress Warehouse, and the like. The main reason mattresses are very expensive could be the long food chain of people that want to make money entirely from producer to the sales person. A mattress might cost $2,000, but there are certainly a lot of people carving their living out of this, and that is why they’re happy to point out that it will last 5-10 years, that the cost per night’s sleep is less than $1, that you spend more time sleeping than doing other things, and so on, and so on. Mattresses are big business, and these companies haven’t any incentive to offer you their wares at decent prices.
Now, with those happy thoughts in your mind, let’s discuss ways to beat this method and look for a cheap mattress of you own. Depending on your own circumstances, and your phobias, an applied mattress can be a great option. A location like Craigslist often has many barely used mattresses that people have kept in their guest bedrooms for years, and now need to get rid of due to downsizing houses, or some other amount of reasons. You will have to be a careful shopper as there are many unseemly mattresses on there as well, but deals may be had. A lesser know fact though, is classifieds like Craigslist will also often have brand new mattresses on the market by wholesalers who buy large a lot of mattresses from mattress warehouses trying to unload inventory. These outfits are certain to get substantial discounts on multiple mattresses and are very happy to resell them way below cost. Do a look for new mattress on Craigslist and see what comes up.
Another selection for finding a cheap mattress could be the large discount chains like Costco and Sam’s Club. People don’t often want to try stores like these, but they can offer great deals for much the same reason that the independent operators mentioned on Craigslist can – they buy in bulk and sell at thinner margins. They do not have the paid-on-commission salespeople that the tiny mattress stores employ.
Finally, a very intelligent route is in order to be patient. Await the once-a-year mix and match sales that the large mattress vendors have. Mix and match sales are when they stores have a lot of mattress and springs that don’t match in color or fabric that they should sell. Again, no one is going to see if it matches anyway, so who cares? These sales can often present deals as high as 50% off, and aren’t to be missed. If you’re still discouraged, don’t be. Just understand that you’re not going to get a whole lot on a mattress the easy way. Like I said, this is a big business, and these companies aren’t going to produce it easy on you to get their products at a discount. You might not look for a cheap memory foam mattress, or the the surface of the line Tempur-Pedic you’re eying, but you should be able to locate a great mattress at an acceptable price if you put forth only a little effort.
